Brexit Threat to Regeneration
Few people have yet to realise that a vote to leave the EU would lead to a major cut in funding for regeneration programmes. The British government has dramatically reduced support from UK sources, with severe impacts on some of the most deprived urban and rural areas.
The funding which has survived is where there are programmes funded by the European Regional Development and European Social Funds.
A Brexit vote would mean these sources of funding ending. It is highly unlikely that, given its past record, the British government would make up the funding lost from EU ‘savings’. This would lead to even fewer resources being devoted to economic regeneration.
All of us engaged in regeneration need to ensure this issue is fully debated before it is too late.
